On the subject of choice and selection and the ability to wrap the knuckles of those who represent us so badly -
Why can't voters have a say in the selection of prospective candidates standing for election in the constituencies in which we live? Such a system might encourage a more informed debate of issues at the local level, and a greater engagement and sense of connection between candidates and constituency.
Who knows, creative use of internet technologies might even encourage a greater proportion of the electorate to use their vote.
The Conservatives have tested this system in a number of areas and I understand that it has worked well. This of course is based on the caucuses system in the US.
I think the overall system of government from the House of Lords through to parish councils should be reformed. Web 2.0 technologies could well help in the engagement that is sadly lacking probably due to the lack of real democracy
